Closing up some bone - all with a new zipper!

October 2013

Just spoke to the Dr. Yu Marni's Neurosurgeon.

He said that the surgery went well and that the preliminary biopsy indicated that the tumor is a grade 3/4 malignant Glimo. The surgical team was able to resect 40% of the tumor.

He said she is doing well and responding normally and it will take another 2 hours to close her up and put a new zipper in her head!

The next update I’ll send a picture...(she'll be pissed.)

5 years-

October 2013

I still remember making it through the first year. It feels like it was yesterday.

Yes, it has been five years - damn- 5 years of surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy, clinical trials (multiple,) vitamins, ointments, juicing, holistic healers, physically therapy, paralysis, and mental therapy (the mental was mostly me.)

Amazing- to watch someone endure so much and still keep getting up every day.

A true inspiration!

Just got the call- surgery started 3 minutes ago....

Religious Studies

October 1, 2013

The kids have been in Religious studies class the past few weeks.

This past week, I was signing Finn into the class and as I began to walk out of the room, the instructor ran over and asked to talk to me.

She came straight out and said, "I'm sorry to ask this so bluntly, but is everything alright at home."  I knew exactly what she was asking the second she stopped me.

I responded with, “what do you mean?” - Looking directly at her eyes for fear that I would break down and cry right there in the room.   She asks if my wife was sick?  I answered with a yes she is, how did you know?

She began to explain that at the end of the class the kids say a prayer and go around the room and say the prayer out loud.

She told me that every time it comes to Finn that he does a special pray for his mom and for her to get better and not to be sick anymore.

Walking quickly to the car, so I can I have one of the emotional breakdown that has been building. I made it to the car and complete lost it.

Sitting in the church parking lot for about 10 minutes; doing my best to pull myself together. I felt a moment of happiness/ peace; a combination of both, that I know, even when I am not with Finn (and Sloan) nurturing and guiding him through his journey in life. That he has / or will realize there is more, a higher power, that carriers him, guides him with faith and compassion; and that there is a plan that is filled with love and life for him.

Weakness vs Strength

January 29, 2013

So here we are- a bit after 4 years of diagnosis and we are back to sever headaches with blurriness vision...

At this point- Marni doesn't type very well. She is completely left-handed and her right arm has limited function.  Don't get me wrong - she still gets fired up and yells like nobodies business when she isn’t happy!

This weekend was a heavy weekend; Marni woke with a 3-day recurring headache. The headaches were so bad that Sunday morning she asked to go to the emergency- absolutely not the norm for her....

What makes life so aware and real is that Finn said to me in Sunday morning when Marni was in pain..."dad I feel so bad" I stopped in the middle of chaos and asked Finn, "bud, why do you feel so bad...?" his response was simple and honest-  "because I have never seen mom cry."

As I sit at our desk and compete the City of Hope (3 opinion paper work) it makes me think that I need to give myself permission to cry more in front of my children. In front of my friends. I realize its not weakness...it really defines how strong you/ we are as people...pl
