April 30th,
Paul and I both got calls from Dr. Rudnick today.
Typically not a good sign when the actual doc calls. He brought my case to the weekly tumor board. How sad is that, a weekly tumor board…
Paul and I usually meet with him and he makes suggestions and we make a decision.
On Monday he gave us that option.
This personal call was to make a strong recommendation.
I called Paul right after I got off the phone with Dr. Rudnick. It was a little after lunch and today was one of those days where I was completely exhausted. After our brief conversation, mostly because I could not remember anything Dr. Rudnick said... Paul got the call from Dr. Rudnick.
(Paul)
Dr. Rudnick called me and he began to explain what he just told Marni. We need to start the Avastin treatment. Primary used for Colon Cancer but has fantastic result in brain tumor patients. I had tons of questions for him that mostly didn’t make sense.
He began to explain that the tumor has not responded to treatment in a way that he felt comfortable even by way of increasing the steroids. He met with the Tumor Board and even the most conservative Dr. recommended the Avastin treatment…
Ringing in the background..
“Paul- can I call you right back.” Dr. Rudnick said….
“Of course,” I said yes…pretty heavy thing to say to me and then take another call…
He called me back 10 minutes later, apologizing that he had to take another call…a call on a 12 year girl that they thought had a brain tumor, but was worse…I think the word he used was…
no…
I know the word he used was DEVISTATING.
There was no elaboration on either side…..
However, I’ll I could think of was a 12 year girl with some condition that is DEVISTATING.
We start the Avastin treatment next week…
good luck Marni! I know it's been a tough road, but at least there are still options. I'm crossing my fingers that this new treatment is the ticket!
